 CP Abutu Yaro, the Edo state police commissioner, has ordered the arrest and imprisonment of four Edo Police Command operatives and a couple in connection with the killing of a vigilante member, Ikponwonsa Aikpitanyi, on Obaze Street, off Ewah Road, in Benin, the state capital.

Aikpitanyi, a 27-year-old member of the local vigilante group at Obaze Street, off Ewah Road, in Benin, was allegedly shot dead by one of the operatives on Friday night, April 22, for allegedly preventing a woman, Rose Sunday, from throwing trash in a neighborhood moat.

Inspr. Igere Victor, Sgt. Umhenin Stanley, Sgt. Okongor Ojong, and Cpl. Monday Joel are the detained operatives, while Mr. and Mrs. Sunday Egboh are the arrested couple.

SP Kontongs Bello, a spokesman for the Edo Police Command, said in a statement that CP Yaro was shocked by the news and called the team’s actions as unacceptable and unprofessional.

He stated that the command will not tolerate acts of misconduct that endanger the peace and safety of Edo State’s law-abiding inhabitants.
